Alcohol and your weight
It causes weight gain: A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found drinking alcohol with a meal increases your tendency to overindulge in fatty foods. Plus, says Mavis Jones of ECHO: Improving Women’s Health in Ontario (a Government of Ontario agency), “Alcohol slows down your metabolism, so it’s more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.”
It helps you stay slim: A 2010 study from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston followed more than 19,000 women for 13 years. They found an inverse relation between weight gain and alcohol consumption, despite the extra calories some women consumed in alcohol. That is, women who drank none gained more weight than those who drank just a bit.
