6. You don’t have a plan
Life is full of variables that can thwart your weight loss goals, like holidays, when tempting, calorie-laden treats abound. Don’t try to abstain from your favorite foods— you’re only human, after all. “You need to plan your holiday cheats,” says Shulman. “If you have no plan, [your diet] will go out the window.” She suggests eating a wholesome snack, such as a hard-boiled egg, before heading to a holiday party. Then choose your “gimme food”— something you know you can’t live without—and plan to indulge in that while cutting back on other things you care about less.
